Borinda
lushiensis
(also known as Yunan 4, Fargesia edulis)
Height: 25+?? feet
Diameter: 1.5 inches
Hardiness: 25°F
Recommended for USDA zone 9, not for climates with high heat and
humidity (southeastern states).
B. lushiensis
is our newest member of the Borinda genus, and quite
possibly the most remarkable. Very rare and highly ornamental when grown
in the right climate.
It is thriving in the UK to a height
of just over 25 feet, making it among the largest of its genus. The
new shoots, vibrant blue behind pink culm sheaths, and the lush green leaves are its
most distinguished features. It requires a sheltered and partially shady area to
look its best. Unfortunately it is recognized as the least cold-hardy
Borinda, hardy only to
25°F. A
mild West coast climate, such as the San Francisco Bay area, would be ideal
if the plant is given adequate wind protection. It has a clumping, non-invasive root
structure.
