Thamnocalamus spathiflorus 'Nyalam'

Height: 8+ feet, possibly to 15 feet
Diameter: 0.5 inch
Hardiness: 15 F
USDA Zone recommended 8 to 9, not for climates with high heat and humidity (southeastern states).

This bamboo was collected in Nyalam, Tibet in 1985 at about 3600m, so it should be pretty hardy. So far it has grown to about 7 or 8 feet tall in Great Britain and here at Bamboo Garden. It has larger leaves than most other Asian Thamnocalamus. According to Paul Whittaker in Hardy Bamboos: Taming the Dragon, it is more upright than the species and the culms are tinted a nice cherry red. There is a white ring under the node. New shoots are pastel blue and green.
