Thamnocalamus spathiflorus 'Nyalam'
Height: 8+ feet,
possibly to 15 feet
This bamboo was collected in Nyalam, Tibet in 1985 at about 3600m, so it should be pretty hardy. So far it has grown to about 7 or 8 feet tall in Great Britain and here at Bamboo Garden. It has larger leaves than most other Asian Thamnocalamus. According to Paul Whittaker in Hardy Bamboos: Taming the Dragon, it is more upright than the species and the culms are tinted a nice cherry red. There is a white ring under the node. New shoots are pastel blue and green.
