A small, fast-spreading, hedge-type bamboo with slender green leaves bearing white stripes. The canes are bright yellow and when exposed to direct morning sunlight turn fire red. The persistent culm sheaths (outer leaf protecting the younger canes) are cream colored and marbled with red patches. This plant is one of the most colorful of all the small running bamboos. It prefers afternoon shade or dappled sun. It is also among the best plants for growing indoors in areas of moderate light.
