From a distance, a mature grove of P. bambusoides will look very similar to the 'Subvariegata' form, but there are a few subtle differences. This variety has culms that are lighter in color, and it has smaller, variegated leaves with light and dark green stripes on a bright rich green background. The variegation is most prominent during spring. 'Subvariegata' may also be slower to establish itself and may not spread as much in the first few years, but it eventually becomes as vigorous, or more so, than the species. This form is uncommon in cultivation and is coveted for its attractive variegation.
