This bamboo with spotted culms is native to the northern regions of China. It can grow in hilly areas, plains and flood lands. It can tolerate dry conditions and a slightly alkaline soil. 'Yunzhu' does not develop the bluish cast that the species is known for, but does develop spots with age. As the culms age the spots merge and new darker spots form on the old spots. The new culm sheaths are also very attractive.
