Yushania sp. 'Climbing'

(Yunnan 95 5)

Max/Avg Height (ft.): 14, 10-12

Diameter: 1 inch

Hardiness: 5º F

USDA Zones: 7-9, Not recommended for climates with a lot of intense heat or high summer humidity (including most of the southern USA)

Unfortunately, this unusual bamboo does not climb, as the name may suggest, but it does have a very long, dominant branch (see photo) which causes a sort of draping growth pattern.  This bamboo came from Chris Stapleton's collection in Yunnan, China (Yunnan 95-5). It has an unusual but garden worthy leaf pattern. The tan colored culm sheaths contrast nicely with the turquoise colored new shoots  Like other Yushania, this bamboo has rhizomes that are technically clumping rhizome type, but because it is so vigorous and has long rhizome "necks", we consider any Yushania to be a spreading bamboo, though not as fast as Phyllostachys.  It is fairly deep rooted, making it good for erosion control.
