This is possibly the hardiest of the Chusqueas. It has been in cultivation for years as Chusquea nigricans until it was decided that it was a form of culeou. The varietal name refers to the dark reddish new culms. The whitish culm sheaths contrast with the dark culms making for an especially attractive plant in the summer when the new culms are growing. It is also very attractive in the winter with the dark green foliage.
